MEN HAVE IT EASIER THAN WOMEN!




A recent study just out confirmed something I have written about before. Men have it easy compared to women...when it comes to weight loss anyway!

The study looked at over 2,000 overweight individuals with pre-diabetes. (Pre-diabetes is a condition where we are starting to find it difficult to control our blood sugar, could lead on to full-blown diabetes and currently affects around 1/3 of us, especially those who are overweight and carry their weight around the middle). These individuals were put on a low-calorie diet for 8 weeks in an attempt to help them lose weight and reverse the metabolic syndrome - a cluster of problems that includes fatty liver disease, diabetes and heart disease. They found that men lost significantly more body weight than women and had larger reductions in a metabolic syndrome score. The women, in contrast, had larger reductions in hip measurement but also in the healthy HDL-cholesterol, and lean body mass suggesting they were losing more muscle than fat. Not great for us girls, really.

Why should this be?

With the drop in healthy cholesterol and a loss of lean mass, the study authors raised concerns that low calorie diets may have negative effects for women in the long-term and felt more investigation was needed. I already know the answer...they are just not a good way to lose weight and keep it off! For multiple reasons.


Anyway, other studies show that enlisting a partner in your weight loss efforts makes them easier to sustain. Just don't get disheartened if a male partner seems to leave you standing...slow and steady will win through in the end!
